Tariffs vs. My Investment Porfolio(s)

April 04, 2025

This morning, I realized I would need to confront the challenge of addressing clients' concerns regarding the recent decline in the stock market. I often find it helpful to compare current situations to periods of similar uncertainty. Today, I began to compare the current stock market conditions to those during the COVID-19 pandemic, when businesses were shutting down and supply chains were disrupted.

Reflecting on COVID, I felt far more uneasy about the stock markets than I do today. Without getting political regarding my opinions on the current administration and its policies, I believe that the tariffs imposed not only by the United States but also by other nations around the world will necessitate some negotiations. Similar to how the stock market rebounded after the initial decline during COVID-19, leading to a strong year, I believe we can experience a similar recovery as nations collaborate to create fairer trade agreements with one another.

It is crucial to reassess your risk tolerance and ensure that your investments align with your financial goals. Younger investors may feel comfortable with market declines and could even view them as an opportunity to buy stocks at a discount. In contrast, retired investors may feel anxious about the significant losses they have experienced in recent weeks. Making changes in a taxable account may result in a tax liability. Therefore, it's important to assess the impact of compounding a market loss with a tax liability before reacting emotionally.
